The Cozy Season Guide for People Who Are Already Tired
Fall has a way of making rest look really cute. Blankets, candles, matching lounge sets, a warm drink, maybe a book strategically placed nearby for the aesthetic. And listen, I am here for it.
But sometimes “cozy season” arrives when you are already freaking tired. Not I need a cute fall reset tired. I mean my brain has 37 tabs open, I’m behind on something, someone needs something from me, and somehow I’m supposed to figure out what’s for dinner again tired.
So maybe this season doesn’t need another complicated wellness routine. Maybe it needs less.
You Don’t Have to Optimize Your Rest
Somewhere along the way, even rest became something we were supposed to be good at. We have morning routines, evening routines, sleep routines, supplement routines, skincare routines, workout schedules, meditation streaks, gratitude journals, step goals... all things that can absolutely be helpful.
But if taking care of yourself has become another list of things you’re failing to accomplish, we may have lost the plot a little.
Rest doesn’t have to be productive, and you don’t have to earn it by finishing everything first. You definitely don’t have to turn your entire life into a wellness project. Sometimes taking care of yourself looks remarkably ordinary: going to bed, putting on comfortable clothes, eating something, turning your phone over, saying no, watching the same show you’ve already watched four times, letting someone else help, going outside for ten minutes, or doing absolutely nothing useful for a little while.
Ordinary care still counts.
Make Comfort Easier to Access
One thing I think we underestimate is how much our physical environment can affect how we feel in it. That doesn’t mean you need to transform your house into a wellness retreat. Think smaller. What makes your space feel comfortable to you?
Maybe it’s softer lighting instead of the overhead light. Maybe it’s having a blanket within reach, keeping your favorite water bottle beside you so you actually remember to drink something, or having a book, diffuser, or ridiculously comfortable sweatshirt nearby.
I also love finding little ways to make home feel more inviting without turning it into another project. A cozy blanket is an easy one. If scent is something you enjoy, I also like having a diffuser and a spa-inspired essential oil set around so I can change the feel of a room without doing much of anything.
Of course, none of those things are required. There isn’t one correct sensory environment or a list of products you need to create one. The goal is simply to pay attention to the things that make your space feel a little easier to exist in.
One of My Cozy-Season Favorites: COMFRT
If you’ve seen me talk about COMFRT, this is where it fits for me. Sometimes I want to come home, put on something oversized and comfortable, and be DONE for the day.
That’s it. That’s the wellness tip.
If you’ve been wanting to try it, you can shop COMFRT here and use my code KENDYL85808610528 for 15% off.
And if you are committed to maximum cozy, they have blankets too. Because apparently being wrapped in a giant sweatshirt was not enough for us.
Make Your Evening Require Fewer Decisions
If you’re already mentally exhausted, 8:30 p.m. probably isn’t the ideal time to suddenly become incredibly disciplined. Instead of asking, “What’s the perfect nighttime routine?” try asking, “What could make tonight a little easier?”
That might mean setting your coffee up for tomorrow, putting your phone on Do Not Disturb, taking a shower earlier instead of waiting until you’re exhausted, leaving your skincare somewhere visible, keeping a book beside your bed, setting out tomorrows clothes, or simply deciding that tonight is a bare-minimum night and going to bed.
Reducing friction is one of my favorite ways to approach wellness because it doesn’t require you to magically become a different person. You’re working with yourself instead of constantly trying to override yourself.
Create a Wind-Down Routine You Actually Like
Your nighttime routine also doesn’t need twelve steps. Pick a few things that help signal that the day is winding down. You might dim the lights, put on your COMFRT set, make tea, read, stretch, turn on a familiar show, journal, put your phone away, or take whatever medications or supplements are already part of your routine.
The important part isn’t copying someone else’s perfect nighttime routine from TikTok. It’s creating something realistic enough that you’ll actually do it.
I tend to think about wellness products the same way. They should fit into your life rather than making you feel like you need to build an entirely new routine around them.
If supplements are already part of your routine, two products you can check out are Lemme Sleep Gummies for the nighttime side of things and Lemme Focus Gummies for daytime. As with any supplement, take a look at the ingredients and decide with your healthcare provider whether something makes sense for you rather than assuming that because something works for someone on the internet, it’s automatically right for you too.
Let Fun Count as Taking Care of Yourself
This is the part of wellness conversations that I think gets forgotten: you are allowed to do things because they’re fun. Not because they improve your nervous system, make you more productive, support one of your goals, or because a therapist on the internet told you they were good for you. You can just enjoy something.
Watch the Halloween movie. Decorate your house. Go to the pumpkin patch. Bake something. Play the game. Buy the ridiculous seasonal coffee. Laugh too hard with your friends. Stay home and do absolutely none of those things.
And please, for the love, not everything you read has to be a self-help book.
I love a useful psychology or personal-growth book as much as the next therapist, but sometimes I do not need to learn anything about myself. I need to know who committed the murder.
If You Want a Mystery
If your ideal fall evening involves a blanket, a drink, and becoming way too invested in fictional people making questionable decisions, here are two mysteries to add to the list:
Sometimes giving your brain somebody else’s problems to think about for a few hours is exactly the assignment.
If You Want a Romance
If murder isn’t really your cozy-season vibe—or you’d rather spend your reading time with fictional relationships, banter, and a little spice—the Off-Campus series by Elle Kennedy is another fun option.
The series follows a group of college hockey players and the women they fall for, with each book focusing on a different couple. They’re interconnected, which means this is absolutely one of those situations where finishing one can quickly turn into, “Okay fine, I’ll start the next one.”
You can work your way through The Deal, The Mistake, The Score, The Goal, and The Legacy.
Or, if you already know who you are and know that buying one is going to turn into reading all five, you can grab the Off-Campus set here.
And yes, reading absolutely counts even when you learned nothing, highlighted nothing, journaled about nothing, and emerged from the experience exactly as you were before.
Enjoyment does not need to justify itself by becoming productive.
If You Want Something to Do With Your Hands
Reading isn’t the only cozy activity that counts. Sometimes I want something that keeps my hands occupied without requiring a ton of brainpower, and coloring is an easy one.
And no, we do not have to turn this into mindful coloring for optimal nervous system regulation. You are also allowed to color because coloring is fun.
Put on a comfort show, podcast, audiobook, or music, grab some markers or colored pencils, and make something. It doesn’t have to be good. You don’t have to finish the page. There is no deeper lesson here.
For something especially seasonal, Cozy Girl Season: Bold and Easy Coloring Book for Adults & Teens has fall, Halloween, and Christmas designs with cute, simple illustrations. Basically, it understood the cozy-season assignment.
If you want Halloween without going full horror, Spooky Cutie: Coloring Book for Adults and Teens features adorable creepy creatures having their own cozy little moments.
Or, if you prefer something you can sit with and work on for a while, Mindfulness Patterns: Coloring Book with Creative Pattern Designs for Stress Relief and Relaxation has more detailed patterns to work through.
Honestly, pairing a coloring book with an audiobook might be one of my favorite ways to give my brain something to do without asking it to accomplish anything.
That’s really the point: not every activity needs to become a tool for improving yourself. Hobbies can just be hobbies. Books can just be entertaining. Coloring can just be coloring. You’re allowed to spend some of your time doing something simply because you like it.
Let Other People Take Care of You Sometimes
If you’re usually the caretaker, organizer, helper, planner, responsible one, or person who says, “I’ve got it,” receiving care can be surprisingly uncomfortable. You get used to being the person who notices what needs to happen and makes it happen.
So practice letting someone else do something for you without immediately figuring out how you’re going to repay them. Accept the compliment. Let someone make dinner. Say yes when someone offers to help. Tell someone you could use company. Ask your partner to handle something. Let yourself be celebrated.
Healthy support isn’t only about how well you show up for everyone else. You get to receive some of it, too.
Your Cozy Season Doesn’t Need a Makeover
You probably don’t need an entirely new version of yourself this fall. You don’t need the perfect morning routine, evening routine, supplement cabinet, workout plan, home, relationship, or self-care schedule.
Instead, ask yourself one question: What would make my life feel 5% easier right now?
The answer might be something you buy, but it also might be something you stop doing. It could be a conversation you need to have, asking someone for help, going to bed earlier, or making time for something that has absolutely no productive value whatsoever.
You don’t have to completely overhaul your life to take better care of yourself. Sometimes wellness is much less glamorous than that.
And sometimes it really is putting on the comfy clothes, turning off the big light, opening a book, and calling it a day.
